What is a gummy smile?
When smiling, if a large mount of gum can be seen, this is referred to as excessive gingival display – or a gummy smile. This can cause some people to feel self concious and embarrassed – stopping them from smiling.
There can be many different causes for a gummy smile. Sometimes the muscles controlling your upper lip cause it to rise quite high, making your gums more prominent. At other times you may have excessive gum tissue, causing your teeth look shorter than they really are. Gummy smiles may even be caused by the shape of your jaw bone and mouth.
